Moving house in India: a week-by-week checklist

By the Nesttr team · 24 September 2026 · 3 min read

Moving home is one of life's most stressful tasks, and in Indian cities it comes with its own complications: society permissions, lift bookings, rental deposits, gas connections and address updates on half a dozen documents. Spreading the work across four weeks keeps it manageable. Here is a checklist you can follow.

Four weeks before

  • Fix the date with your landlord or seller and confirm the move-in date at the new home.
  • Give notice at your current home as per your rental agreement, and ask in writing about the security deposit refund timeline.
  • Get moving quotes from at least three packers and movers. Ask what is included: packing material, loading, transport, unloading, unpacking, and transit insurance.
  • Declutter. Go room by room and decide what to keep, sell, donate or throw away. Every box you don't move saves money and time.
  • Check society rules at both buildings: permitted moving hours, lift booking, deposits for lift damage and whether a no-dues certificate is needed.

Three weeks before

  • Collect packing material: sturdy boxes, tape, markers, bubble wrap and old newspapers.
  • Start packing rarely used items: books, seasonal clothes, extra utensils and decorative pieces.
  • Label every box with the room and a short list of contents. Number the boxes and keep a simple list on your phone.
  • Arrange school transfers if you have children, and collect transfer certificates.

Two weeks before

  • Book utility transfers or new connections: electricity name change, internet shifting, LPG connection transfer to the new address (contact your gas distributor), and water connection if needed.
  • Plan the new home layout, so furniture goes straight to the right room.
  • Arrange childcare or pet care for moving day. Moving is chaotic and stressful for little ones and animals. See our guide to pet care when you're busy or away.
  • Book extra hands if family can't help. You can book Moving & Packing Help on Nesttr by the hour for packing, loading and unpacking alongside your movers.

One week before

  • Pack most of the house, leaving only daily essentials.
  • Defrost and clean the fridge a day or two before the move.
  • Take photos of the old home's condition for your deposit claim, and of electronics' wiring so you can reconnect them easily.
  • Confirm the movers: time, vehicle size, number of people, payment terms and the insurance cover.

The essentials box

Pack one box (or suitcase) that travels with you, not with the movers:

  • documents: rental agreement, IDs, insurance papers, school certificates;
  • chargers, laptop and a power bank;
  • medicines for everyone in the family;
  • a change of clothes, towels and toiletries;
  • basic utensils, a kettle, tea, snacks and water;
  • a small tool kit, scissors, a torch and spare bulbs.

Moving day

  • Be present when the movers arrive, and walk them through what goes and what stays.
  • Check the box count at loading and again at unloading.
  • Keep valuables — jewellery, cash, important documents — with you personally.
  • Do a final walkthrough of the old home: cupboards, lofts, balcony and meter readings.
  • At the new home, direct each box to its labelled room.

After the move

  • Update your address on Aadhaar, bank accounts, insurance policies, vehicle documents and any delivery apps.
  • Unpack room by room, starting with the kitchen and bedrooms.
  • Meet the neighbours and save the society office and security numbers.
  • Follow up on your deposit with the old landlord, sharing your photos if there is any dispute.

Settling in

Once the boxes are gone, a new neighbourhood can feel lonely at first. Walk around, find your nearest chemist, grocery store, clinic and park, and say yes to invitations. If you have moved to a new city altogether, read our guide on settling into a new city and making friends. For organising the new home, Home & Organizing Help can save a weekend of unpacking.

A move never goes perfectly, but with a plan and a few extra hands, it can go smoothly enough that you are enjoying your new home within days rather than weeks.

Common questions

How far in advance should I book packers and movers?

Two to four weeks ahead is sensible, and earlier for month-end dates and festival or wedding season, when demand is high.

What should I never give to the movers?

Keep jewellery, cash, important documents, laptops and medicines with you in your essentials box rather than in the moving truck.

How do I make sure I get my rental deposit back?

Give notice in writing, photograph the flat's condition when you leave, clear dues and meter readings, and follow up in writing using your rental agreement's refund terms.
